6. The Purge

No matter how rubbish your 2017 was, at least you were spared from living under a totalitarian political party (it says here) who initiated The Purge, the twelve-hour period (7 p.m. March 21 – 7 a.m. March 22) when all crime is legal.

There are two very good reasons why the New Founding Fathers Of America chose to implement the scheme, the first being that an annual Purge causes crime rates to plunge during the rest of the year. The second is that most of the victims are poor, which cuts unemployment and lowers welfare spending.

By 2022, when the first film in the franchise takes place, the flaws in the scheme are apparent. Turns out a fella can get rich by selling “impregnable” security systems to his neighbors, but his success breeds resentment so come Purge Night they decide to attack his house.
