10 Movie Dystopias That Should've Happened By Now

5. Terminator 2: Judgment Day

There’s only one Terminator sequel that wasn’t written by monkeys with typewriters and that movie informs us that “Judgment Day” took place on August 29 1997, resulting in global catastrophe and upsetting fans of the Spice Girls who’d been quite looking forward to the release of Spice World in December.

According to James Cameron, late 1990s technology was going to be so advanced that an artificial intelligence system could not only initiate nuclear holocaust but also send a Terminator made out of a mimetic poly-alloy (“liquid metal”) back through time to kill John Connor. The reality of life in the summer of 1997 turned out to be very different but no less catastrophic, as anyone who lined up to watch Batman & Robin will tell you.

On a side note, what made filmmakers see so much significance in the year 1997? As well as being selected by Cameron as the date of The Big One, it’s also the year when Predator 2 and Escape From New York take place. Could they all be part of a shared cinematic universe?
