10 Movie Dystopias That Should've Happened By Now
2. Demolition Man
When the “Great Earthquake of 2010” devastates the cities of Santa Barbara, San Diego and Los Angeles, they merge into San Angeles, a “society of peace, love and understanding” ruled over by Dr Raymond Cocteau (Nigel Hawthorn).
Pornography, masturbation and abortions are illegal, Virtual Reality sex has replaced the norm and artificial-insemination pregnancy is licensed but if you disagree with Cocteau’s vision then you’ll end up starving in the sewers with the rest of the “scraps”. Awoken in 2032 after being cryogenically frozen for 36 years, John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) sees the flaws in Doc’s vision when some of these folks interrupt Cocteau’s dinner party and try to steal food.
They’re becoming organized so in an attempt to curtail their “radical terrorist behaviour” Doc thaws out Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) and sends him to kill their would-be leader, Edgar Friendly. Friendly is played by stand-up Denis Leary so basically this movie is about a society whose leader polarizes the country with his conservative values while the opposition, led by a comic, is skilled only at staying out of sight.
Any resemblance to the America of 2004, where President Bush polarized the country while Michael Moore preached to the choir, is purely coincidental.
