10 Movie Endings That KILLED Franchises For Good

5. Wolverine Dies - Logan

Logan Ending

Though Logan wasn't actually the last entry into Fox's X-Men franchise, it nevertheless represented the artistic and spiritual death of the series in every way that matters.

James Mangold's thrilling superhero western was admittedly positioned as a tangential alt-future for the X-Men series, in which no mutants have been born for 25 years, and those who remain are living on the fringes of society.

Logan's masterstroke, ultimately, was in finally retiring Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in a highly affecting and fitting manner, having him sacrifice himself to help get a group of super-powered children, including Laura aka X-23 (Dafne Keen), to safety.

The film ends with Logan quite literally dead and buried with there being no prospect of his return, and considering that Jackman has always been the heart and soul of Fox's X-Men series, it marked the point at which most fans took their leave.

Though Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants were released in the years that followed, for most they felt like afterthoughts, especially once Disney's acquisition of Fox - and inevitable integration of the X-Men into the MCU - had been announced.

Unsurprisingly both films bombed at the box office, and poor reviews only confirmed them to be the series' post-Logan death rattle.
