10 Movie Endings That Leave More Questions Than Answers

4. Birdman

American Psycho
Fox Searchlight

Depending on how you view the ending of this film, it can either be tragic or hopeful. Birdman follows a faded famous actor, Riggan Thompson, who was best known for portraying the titular superhero, Birdman.

An inner monologue of Birdman torments him as he frequently visualises himself levitating and having the power of telekinesis. At the end of the film, Riggan attempts to kill himself on stage by intentionally shooting himself in the head.

However, he wakes up in the hospital, finding that he only shot off his nose, which has now been reconstructed together. In the hospital, Riggan decides to jump out the window, possibly believing he could fly.

His daughter sees him jump and rushes out to the window looking down before looking up and smiling, and the movie ends.

Did Riggan die or did he fly? Was the ending meant to symbolise his spirit finally being free, or was the insane actor not insane at all and had superpowers this whole time? As mentioned at the beginning, how you view the ending can either make this a tragic or hopeful end.
