9. Now You See Me - Who Saw That Coming?
Now You See Me was a magician movie that tried to manipulate the audience in the same way and style as a real magic show, while throwing back the curtain and showing you how it all happens. Sound familiar? Well, Now You See Me is no The Prestige, no matter how much it wants to be.
Fans of The Prestige will tell you that its twists and turns are some of the best in the history of film, and it's very apparent that Now You See Me is trying to do the same. But the final twist, the reveal of who exactly orchestrated the entire thing, unfortunately, proved that this movie was not a new and improved Prestige.
The movie's filmmakers wanted the final reveal to be so shocking that it measured up to its inspiration. Because of this, they neglected to put in any clues that helped audiences figure out the truth. In fact, they went out of their way to include scenes and dialogue that pretty much made it impossible for the reveal to make sense.
You see, the movie follows four talented magicians that are recruited by a mysterious leader to conduct a Robin Hood-esque mission. The movie spends a lot of its time following a police detective as he tries to figure out who exactly this mystery person is. Only to reveal in the last few moments that the mystery man is the clueless cop! What?!
