10 Movie Endings That Wanted To Piss You Off
2. No Country For Old Men - It's The Coen Brothers, What Did You Expect?
No Country For Old Men feels like there is some meaning to the vicious violence going on, it feels like it must all be happening for some purpose. That is until the third act where pretty much every character turns up dead in shallow and meaningless ways.
The movie follows a lot of characters, but it mainly focuses on the cat and mouse and smaller mouse game between Sheriff Bell, psychopath Anton, and everyman Llewelyn. One day, after a drug bust went wrong, Llewelyn accidentally comes across the fatal scene of multiple bodies, a dying man and a briefcase full of 2 million dollars. At that moment, whether knowingly or not, Llewelyn decides to risk everything he has for that cash.
Anton is then hired to retrieve the money and kill Llewelyn, and after breaking and entering Llewelyn's home, Sheriff Bell is assigned to the case to figure out what's going on. But, as the final act rolls in, the Coen Brothers do what they do best, and they up the bleakness to 100%.
Llewelyn is killed by random men off-screen before he can give the cash to his wife. Anton retrieves the money, and pursues Llewelyn's wife, killing her offscreen before getting run off the road. And the good sheriff retires, stating that he was out-matched by the extreme violence of his most recent case.
It's bleak, it feels pretty meaningless and it makes you wonder why you just spent 2 hours watching the movie.
