10 Movie Endings You Definitely Misunderstood The First Time
1. First Reformed
First Reformed is one of those movies where the ending is technically ambiguous, but there's really only one explanation that makes concrete sense.
In the drama's climax, tortured Pastor Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) prepares to commit suicide by drinking a glass of drain cleaner, but seemingly before he can do it, his love interest Mary (Amanda Seyfried) bursts into the room.
In the final moments, the pair embrace and kiss, just as director Paul Schrader cuts to black.
If you read the discourse surrounding the film online, there are a lot of people who take the ending literally, that Toller was indeed interrupted in his suicide attempt by Mary, who effectively saved him from death.
Isn't it considerably more plausible that Toller actually chugged the drain cleaner and, in his dying final moments, simply imagined Mary coming to his rescue?
As much as we'd all love to believe that Amanda Seyfried would burst through the door and save us in our lowest moment, it's just not realistic, is it?
