The Theory

New Star Wars antagonist General Grievous (Matthew Wood) is revealed to be a revived cyborg version of The Phantom Menace's beloved, short-lived antagonist Darth Maul (Ray Park).

Why Everyone Believed It

Given that Darth Maul was initially expected to be sticking around for the entire Star Wars prequel trilogy, it seemed highly probable that he'd end up resurrected somehow in Revenge of the Sith, and Grievous' robotic form was as tidy an explanation as any, honestly.

What Actually Happened

Though Maul was eventually revived in The Clone Wars animated series, Grievous sadly didn't turn out to be Maul, though much like Maul was a massively underwhelming presence who was killed off far too quickly.

However, theories still persist to this day that Grievous was indeed originally intended to be Maul 2.0, given that he has a clear history with Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and his in-movie backstory is so vague.
