The Theory

The Star Wars sequel trilogy's apparent Big Bad, Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), is actually the legendary Darth Plagueis the Wise, the master of Darth Sidious/Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) who Palpatine purportedly killed.

Why Everyone Believed It

This just felt right - given Snoke's mysterious past and Plagueis' mythic esteem in the Expanded Universe, this reveal would've been a jaw-dropping bomb of fan service.

More basically, Snoke's haggard physical features - namely a gigantic scar across his head - could relate to both Palpatine's attempt to kill him and the means through which he was able to survive.

The fact that The Force Awakens' director J.J. Abrams kept denying that Snoke was Plagueis only doused fuel on the fire, especially after the whole "Benedict Cumberbatch isn't Khan" debacle with Star Trek Into Darkness.

What Actually Happened

Crushingly, this wasn't the case. Snoke was surprisingly killed off in The Last Jedi, only for The Rise of Skywalker to reveal that he was in fact created in a lab by Palpatine, making him a whole lot less interesting in the process.
