The Theory: Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still a few months away from release, but as is customary with Star Wars movies, fans have been predicting, speculating and hypothesising ever since it was first announced.

One of the new characters debuting in the movie - Benicio Del Toro's DJ - has been shrouded in secrecy since he was first revealed, so as you'd expect, fans haven't wasted any time in attempting to piece together his true identity, if he's even hiding one.

A theory that originated on Reddit (and was eventually picked up by several major outlets) guessed that Del Toro was playing Ezra Bridger, a character from Star Wars Rebels - and that he'd also be Rey's father.

The theory made sense on several levels (Del Toro would be the right age to play an adult Ezra, for example) and was generally met with a positive response.

The Rejection: But then, along came The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, who quickly spoiled the fun.

Johnson was being interviewed by Good Morning America, and, when asked about the DJ/Ezra theory, he swiftly put it to bed. "He's his own person", said the director, "DJ is his own person".

Still, since the identity of Rey's father has obviously not been revealed yet, there's still a chance that DJ could be the one to fill this role - he just won't be Ezra.
