3. Classic Film Fans
What They Think: "Films just aren't as good as they used to be." These people claim that films aren't as good anymore, and that the classic days of Casablanca, Citizen Kane, and so on were the best that Hollywood has ever had to offer. They are, of course, simply being blinded by nostalgia, and conveniently ignore some of the finer points of modern Hollywood production. First and foremost, there are simply more films being made nowadays, so naturally there's going to be more garbage coming out, but also, there's going to be more
great films than ever coming out every year. This view also forgets that plenty of crap came out in the 1940s; we've just never heard of it. Cinema has certainly changed a lot since the Golden Age of Hollywood, but is it in a bad way? Absolutely not; it's just the natural progression of the medium, and despite what these people might tell you, not every great film needs to be part of the Criterion Collection.
