10 Movie Franchises That (Almost) Destroyed Their Star

7. Transformers - Shia LaBeouf

Though Shia LaBeouf's career has taken a turn in recent years towards lower-budget art-house fare, he first made a name for himself by appearing in Michael Bay's original three Transformers movies, playing lead Sam Witwicky.

But LaBeouf's time working on the movies was a creatively unsatisfying one for the actor, who recently claimed that he was only happy with the first of his three Transformers films, calling the two sequels "irrelevant" and adding, "It's very hard to keep doing what you're doing when you feel like it's the antithesis of your purpose on this planet."

LaBeouf has had several run-ins with the law over the years, and while filming 2009's Revenge of the Fallen, he severely injured his hand in a car wreck, which saw his driving license suspended after he failed to submit to a breathalyser test.

In more recent years the actor has opened up about being diagnosed with PTSD following his traumatic experiences as a child actor, which doubtless fostered his own admitted struggles with alcoholism, and combined with the responsibility of starring in a major tentpole franchise, clearly exacerbated his public personal problems.

Though LaBeouf was arrested once again in 2017 for public drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and obstruction, he has since entered rehab and remained sober for over two years, while recently receiving some of the best reviews of his career for his performances in indie dramas The Peanut Butter Falcon and Honey Boy.
