10 Movie Franchises That Died In 2015

6. The Transporter

The Franchise: The Transporter series kicked off with 2002's modestly successful original, scoring just barely double its $21 million budget and scoring mixed reviews, while helping cement Jason Statham as an action hero par excellence. Even though critical response dwindled somewhat with the two sequels, they were both much more successful, raking in $85.1 million and $108.9 million respectively, after which Statham moved onto The Expendables franchise and seemed done with Transporter. How It Died: Last year, however, a reboot was confirmed, with young up-and-comer Ed Skrein taking over The Stath's Frank Martin role with a slashed budget. Though the film made $46.3 million (more than double its budget and out-grossing the first entry), it's a major step down from the last two movies and, in our more risk-averse times, may not convince the studio to carry on with more movies starring Skrein, who was widely criticised for his wooden performance. Plus, considering that an attempted TV series has already come (and possibly gone), there aren't many places to take the movies other than the straight-to-VOD dungeon.
