The Franchise: Pretty Woman and Princess Diaries director Garry Marshall has been best known in recent years for helming a trilogy of seasonal romantic comedies, beginning with Valentine's Day, following up with New Year's Eve and concluding with this year's Mother's Day.

How It Died: Mother's Day was absolutely eviscerated by critics (more so than even the two prior films), but the real kicker is that this was also the first film of the trilogy to bomb with audiences, making only $43.8 million worldwide, almost $100 million less than either of the previous films.

That's not all, though: director Marshall died a few months after Mother's Day hit screens, so it's likely that the franchise will die with him.
