10 Movie Franchises That Died In 2022

5. DC League Of Super-Pets

Black Adam Dwayne Johnson
Warner Bros.

Even with animation generally struggling at the box office since the pandemic, DC League of Super-Pets seemed like a total sure thing. Your favourite DC superheroes reimagined as cute animals and voiced by A-list actors? And budgeted at a sensible $90 million? It couldn't miss.

Except it did, albeit not as spectacularly as most of the films on this list.

The decently-reviewed animation managed to net $204.7 million worldwide, doubling its budget, though Warner Bros. was clearly hoping for something in the $300-500 million range, especially with Minions: The Rise of Gru grossing more than $900 million mere weeks earlier.

This isn't the sort of stellar box office performance that truly kickstarts a franchise, and so it seems highly unlikely that it's going anywhere, despite Dwayne Johnson's promise that a DC Super-Pets cinematic universe has been born.

Honestly the best Johnson can hope for at this stage is a much lower-budget film or TV series made for HBO Max - neither of which he'd probably be interested in - but as a big-screen proposition its goose is cooked.
