10 Movie Franchises That Ended Too Soon

7. Evil Dead

Blade movie
Universal Pictures

Sure, recent years have served up three seasons of the fantastic Ash vs. Evil Dead series, and we did get a surprisingly great reboot back in 2013, but fans have been clamouring for another full-on, proper, Sam Raimi-directed, Bruce Campbell-headlined Evil Dead movie for the best part of 30 years now!

It's absolutely nuts to think that the last real big-screen outing for Campbell's Ashley J. Williams - not counting his post-credits cameo in Fede Alvarez's reboot - was way back in 1992. 28 years have passed since Army of Darkness first screened at the Sitges Film Festival, and the franchise's rabid fan base are still to this day holding out hope for a true movie follow-up to that third outing for the series.

Further fanning the flames of those fans, is the fact that both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have talked up an Army of Darkness 2 for so many years now. There was even a tentative plan for Raimi's Army of Darkness 2 and Fede Alvarez's proposed plans for an Evil Dead 2 to dovetail into a combined tale that would see these two worlds and sets of characters unite in a seventh overall film for the greater Evil Dead franchise.

Whether any future Evil Dead movies are still to come, we'll have to wait and see. But if Bruce Campbell's Ash is to get only three total cinematic outings, that would be a major disappointment for genre fans - and most certainly not groovy.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic.
