10 Movie Franchises That Ended Too Soon

4. The Addams Family

A new animated Addams offering may have hit the silver screen last year, yet it feels as if a golden opportunity was missed when Paramount opted not to continue on with a third film for The Addams Family.

The Barry Sonnenfeld-directed duo of 1991's The Addams Family and 1993's Addams Family Values were a hoot for those who like their humour to be doused in a dour and dark sheen. And with the cast of Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, Christine Ricci, Jimmy Workman, Judith Malina, Carel Struycken, and the hand of Christopher Hart, this franchise had been assembled perfectly for what audiences both new and old to the IP would expect.

Even if Paramount did decide to begin work on a third movie, tragedy struck in 1994 when Raul Julia died at the age of just 54. The truth is though, the studio had already opted not to pursue a threequel, going as far as to sell off the home video rights for the property to Saban Entertainment.

Technically, Saban did provide fans with a third film. The only thing is, 1998's Addams Family Reunion - with only Struckyen's Lurch and Hart's Thing returning - was intended as a two-hour pilot for what would be a new Addams Family TV series. Unsurprisingly, Addams Family Reunion, despite the best efforts of Tim Curry as Gomez Addams, was a dud.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. Between his main dayjob, his role as the lead panel host of Wales Comic Con, and his gig as a pre-match host for Wrexham AFC games, Andrew has also carried out a hugely varied amount of interviews, from the likes of Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Adrienne Barbeau, Rob Zombie, Katharine Isabelle, Leigh Whannell, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd, to Kevin Smith, Ron Perlman, Elijah Wood, Giancarlo Esposito, Simon Pegg, Charlie Cox, the Russo Brothers, and Brian Blessed, to Kevin Conroy, Paul Dini, Tara Strong, Will Friedle, Burt Ward, Andrea Romano, Frank Miller, and Rob Liefeld, to Bret Hart, Sting, Mick Foley, Ricky Starks, Jamie Hayer, Britt Baker, Eric Bischoff, and William Regal, to Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, Phil Parkinson, Brian Flynn, Denis Smith, Gary Bennett, Karl Connolly, and Bryan Robson - and that's just the tip of an ever-expanding iceberg.
