10 Movie Franchises That Ended Too Soon

3. The Amazing Spider-Man

Throwing this out there on front street, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a disappointment of huge proportions.

For so many film fans - particularly those with a penchant for the world of the Wall-crawler - there was so much anticipation for the second of Marc Webb's Spidey movies. With Andrew Garfield back in the saddle as ol' Web-head, it was well known that this sequel was one intended to sow the seeds for so much of what was to come for Spider-Man and his collection of supporting players.

Before The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had even been released, Sony had already announced release dates for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man 4, Venom, and The Sinister Six. Unfortunately for Sony though, the stink of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was such that all of these previously announced films were completely canned.

Did The Amazing Spider-Man franchise deserve to continue after ASM2? On the face of it, no. But the reason it's included here is for the simple fact that after doing so much legwork to allude to what was to come, audiences at least deserved to see these teases and nods play out in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Granted, it could've been more of the dull, head-scratching, PS3-esque CGI-driven drivel, but the poor souls who were put through the pain of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 should've be afforded the chance to see if that initial disappointment was to ultimately have a great payoff down the line.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. Between his main dayjob, his role as the lead panel host of Wales Comic Con, and his gig as a pre-match host for Wrexham AFC games, Andrew has also carried out a hugely varied amount of interviews, from the likes of Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Adrienne Barbeau, Rob Zombie, Katharine Isabelle, Leigh Whannell, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd, to Kevin Smith, Ron Perlman, Elijah Wood, Giancarlo Esposito, Simon Pegg, Charlie Cox, the Russo Brothers, and Brian Blessed, to Kevin Conroy, Paul Dini, Tara Strong, Will Friedle, Burt Ward, Andrea Romano, Frank Miller, and Rob Liefeld, to Bret Hart, Sting, Mick Foley, Ricky Starks, Jamie Hayer, Britt Baker, Eric Bischoff, and William Regal, to Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, Phil Parkinson, Brian Flynn, Denis Smith, Gary Bennett, Karl Connolly, and Bryan Robson - and that's just the tip of an ever-expanding iceberg.
