10 Movie Franchises That Just Kept Getting Worse
1. Jaws
Jaws was never intended to be a franchise, but the desire from Universal to make a quick buck quickly bastardized the concept and led to serious overkill. In just 12 years, the series had gone from revolutionizing the entire movie business to delivering a cinematic turd that is still frequently mentioned as a contender for the title of worst movie ever made.
Everyone knows about Jaws' list of accolades; Steven Spielberg's breakthrough feature popularized the 'high-concept' movie, served as the genesis for the summer blockbuster, saw Hollywood rethink its entire theatrical release strategy and became the highest-grossing movie of all time. It is an unquestionable classic of American cinema. The rest of the franchise? Not so much.
Jaws 2 is the best of the bunch, a standard B-movie riding on the coattails of its famous predecessor. Jaws 3-D is as gimmicky as its plot is stupid, but nothing can hold a candle to Jaws: The Revenge. Nothing.
One of the rare movies to hold a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the plot follows a vindictive shark that follows the Brody family over a thousand miles from Amity Island to the Bahamas in order to give them their comeuppance. No seriously. Not even 'so bad its good', just 'so bad its really just a big pile of sh*t', it capped off what is possible the single most alarming fall from grace for any movie franchise in history.
