10 Movie Franchises That Were Rebooted Multiple Times

The Eighth Wonder of The World himself is no stranger to reboots, having received four in the 86 years since the 1933 original hit screens - two of which were outright remakes.

Following the success of the original film, Kong lay dormant for nearly three decades before he thrilled Japanese audiences in the kaiju films King Kong vs. Godzilla and King Kong Escapes.

However, he was reintroduced to the world in Dino De Laurentiis' 1976 remake, which modified the original story to match its time period. The film went down mixed, but it did incredibly well at the box office, introduced the world to the legendary Jessica Lange, and even spawned a sequel a decade later - the all-but-forgotten King Kong Lives.

After the sequel flopped, Kong remained off the big screen for a further 19 years, before Peter Jackson remade the film one more time, resurrecting the golden age approach of the 1933 classic. It was a huge success, bringing in $550 million globally, but it was very much a one-and-done story and, as a result, no sequels were made.

12 years later, Kong returned to the screen in Legendary's prequel of sorts, Kong: Skull Island - kick-starting his role in Legendary's MonsterVerse and setting the stage for his showdown with Godzilla next year.

The story of King Kong is timeless and, unlike other franchises, each reboot has offered something different. It's good to know that, despite his age, he shows no signs of slowing down in the near future.
