10 Movie Franchises Which Got Terribly Adapted TWICE

7. Hitman

Tomb Raider
Fox

Where video game movies are concerned, adapting Hitman seems like a damn breeze on paper - hire a stoic actor willing to shave their head and have them slink through a series of cool, suspenseful assassination set-pieces. Done.

But 2007's first Hitman adaptation utterly betrayed the ethos of the games' emphasis on stealth, focusing instead on chaotic, incredibly un-Hitman-like action sequences, accompanied by an absolutely witless script.

Worst of all, it was a total waste of star Timothy Olyphant's piercing gaze, who himself called the film a "pile of s**t" and admitted he only took the part to pay for his new house following the sudden cancellation of TV show Deadwood.

Despite turning a solid profit, a sequel never materialised - perhaps due to Olyphant's reluctance to return - and so a reboot, Hitman: Agent 47, instead came out in 2015 starring Rupert Friend.

Said reboot didn't exactly get off on the best foot with fans given that Friend's new iteration didn't even have a fully shaved bald head, and the rest of the film exhibits the same patent lack of care throughout.

Like its predecessor, this second adaptation tosses the essence of Hitman aside in favour of thunderously dull, CGI-soaked action sequences and garbage dialogue.

Following its inexplicable box office success a sequel was planned, though was mercifully scuttled by Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019.
