10 Movie Franchises Which Got Terribly Adapted TWICE
6. The Haunted Mansion
The Haunted Mansion is the only entry on this list to be adapted from a theme park ride because, save for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it hasn't typically been an avenue for success. As such, Hollywood generally only attempts to make them into movies once.
But The Haunted Mansion is the big exception, beginning with 2003's Eddie Murphy-starring romp which, bar some robust production design, is a shockingly dull affair that even Murphy's madcap stylings can't much elevate.
Despite performing decently at the box office, a sequel never happened, and in recent years Murphy himself has admitted that he doesn't think the film's very good.
And because Disney doesn't know the word "restraint," of course they eventually dusted the IP off for another mega-budget go-around, this time dumping $150 million into a new adaptation fronted by the great LaKeith Stanfield.
Though the cast is clearly having fun and it has a few mildly amusing moments, for the most part this is an overly safe, personality-devoid reimagining that's neither funny nor scary enough to satisfy.
At least with it crashing hard commercially - grossing barely $100 million last summer - it seems incredibly unlikely that Disney will touch the brand with a cinematic bargepole anytime soon.
