10 Movie Franchises Which Got Terribly Adapted TWICE

5. Street Fighter

Tomb Raider
Universal & Fox

The failure of two distinct adaptations of Street Fighter is all the proof you need that not all beloved video games need to be anything more. Even with the games' array of unforgettable characters, there's just no narrative meat to hang on them bones.

1994's first live-action movie is remembered only for the late Raul Julia's borderline-heroic performance in the role of villain M. Bison, but was otherwise a risible failure - yet still grossed almost $100 million globally.

Plans for a sequel never materialised, though, and so a reboot was eventually released in 2009 - Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starring Smallville's Kristin Kreuk as the titular combatant.

Somehow, this film was received even more poorly than its predecessor, scoring a brutal 3% on Rotten Tomatoes - down from the 1994 film's 11%.

Were it not for Chris Klein's hilariously hammy performance as Interpol Agent Charlie Nash, The Legend of Chun-Li wouldn't even live on as a punching bag meme - it'd simply be forgotten.

But because Street Fighter remains a fiercely popular video game franchise, of course Hollywood is currently developing a third attempt - which at least has talented Talk to Me filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou attached to direct.
