10 Movie Franchises With Epic Crossover Events
1. Freddy Vs Jason
Finally, we have a horror clash of epic proportions. Throughout the eighties, the slasher villains Jason Vorhees and Freddy Krueger dominated the genre. One was a summer camp creation who stalked unwitting spring-breakers. The other gruesomely murdered teenagers in their dreams. They were practically destined to appear in a movie together at some point.
At the end of Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, the promise was made. Freddy Kruger's glove shot out from the sand and dragged Jason's mask into the Earth. After a long wait, Freddy Vs Jason finally arrived in the summer of 2003, directed by Ronny Yu.
At the time, the two antagonists had become far more iconic than the movies they appeared in. It was clear they were carrying the crossover on their own and for the most part the film lived up to those trashy slasher stories. Freddy ressurects and manipulates Jason to restore his own brand of terror, but the two eventually start cleaving their way through each other.
Freddy vs Jason may have bombed with reviewers, but it was warmly embraced by fans, making three times its budget at the box office. It was a rare breed of crossover, but one that happened at just the right time with the popular slasher villains falling under the same studio. Nowadays, ownership of rights makes it nearly impossible for another crossover to happen. Those hoping for a Michael Myers vs Leatherface flick will remain sorely disappointed.
