10 Movie Franchises With Epic Crossover Events

9. The Mummy

Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman
Universal Pictures

Seventy years ago, Universal created the crossover production as it's known today. However, a few short years ago, they attempted a modern rendition with decidedly poor results. Having seen Marvel's massive success with their own cinematic universe, the studio attempted to cash in with their own effort. At the time there hadn't been a Mummy film since 2011's Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Instead, modern audiences were treated to a horrendously plodding and hackneyed production that was far more focused on launching a series of films than being an enjoyable film. It was chock full of poorly thought out choices from Tom Cruise's utterly generic performance to desperate bids to kickstart future films.

The entire sequence involving Russell Crowe's Dr Jekyll was a tedious rip-off of Nick Fury showing up at the end of the original Iron Man. It didn't take long for audiences to catch on as The Mummy bombed both critically and commercially.

The 2018 film failed miserably in its bid to craft a Dark Universe. The planned entries involving the Invisible Man and other faces of horror were quickly abandoned following the film's failure. Luckily, some of these productions were re-purposed into far better efforts, most notably 2020's The Invisible Man starring Elizabeth Moss.
