8. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
In the early 2000s, superhero movies had a massive resurgence. Thanks to the likes of X-Men and Spider-Man, there was big money to be made from comic book adaptations. One of the lesser known properties was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Alan Moore's original work brought together a variety of literary elements, but the film adaptation struggled to craft a compelling flick. As an early effort to bring together multiple characters in a contemporary setting, the cast was strong and the idea of a grand showdown seemed like a sure fire hit.
Releasing in 2003, this didn't come to pass. For starters, there were too many characters fighting over screen time and once the narrative reaches the second act, things dragged to a ridiculous level. On top of that, much of the elements that made the comic series so engaging were left out to get the rating down to a 12A.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was such a flop that it managed to end the careers of both Stephen Norrington and Sean Connery. The director found the big budget production an exercise in severe stress and hasn't directed another production since. Sean Connery called it a miserable experience, one that made him disillusioned with the Hollywood system.
