10 Movie Goodbyes That'll Break You (When You Know The Truth)

3. Norman's Heart - On Golden Pond

Final Destination Bloodlines William Bludworth

The 1981 drama On Golden Pond stars Henry Fonda as Norman, a retired elderly professor who finds himself grappling with the ravages of old age - namely dementia and heart issues.

At the end of the movie, Norman begins to have chest pains and collapses, much to the alarm of his wife Ethel (Katharine Hepburn).

However, after a moment the pain passes and Norman appears to be OK, as he and Ethel say farewell to the the lakeside cottage they've been spending the bulk of the movie.

On Golden Pond actually turned out to be Henry Fonda's final theatrical film role, and his closing moments on screen are nothing if not a reflection of the man's own health woes.

In later years, Fonda was himself stricken by cardiac issues, just like Norman, and ultimately died of heart disease just eight months after On Golden Pond was released.

However, prior to his death Fonda did win the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the film.

It was the single Oscar win of his entire career, though due to his declining health, his daughter Jane - who also starred in the film, as Norman's own daughter - accepted it on his behalf.
