10 Movie Heroes Who Didn’t Know They Were The Villains
9. Neo, Trinity & Morpheus - The Matrix Trilogy
When you list off the villains of The Matrix Trilogy, the idea of adding the three leads to that roster would never even cross your mind.
With the murderous squid-like machines in the real world, super-powered agents in the simulated one and treacherous humans moving across both, we somehow forget about these three.
The obvious point to make would be how explicitly the three leads mow down people who are "plugged in" and therefore aren't free like them. The justification for killing those in the Matrix is questionable at best, but where these three really push the boat out is the minds they do free are welcomed into a society that isn't better off.
All those majestic sales pitches Morpheus must have made to his acolytes; only for them to wake up and discover they are in a war against robots.
As much of a traitor as Cipher is in the first film, he does make a good point that maybe staying in The Matrix itself was better than living in the real world.
While it is never explicitly stated they are villains, there are questions to be had about "setting people free" and treating everyone else still plugged in as target practice.
