10 Movie Heroes You Didn't Realise Were Total A-Holes

10. C.C. Baxter - The Apartment

The Lie At the centre of Billy Wilder's The Apartment is one of the most famous love stories in all of cinema. Much loved for its understated realism, the film ends with C.C. Baxter and the woman he has loved throughout the film playing cards. No big romantic gestures, just an insight into what their lives will be like together. After putting up with his boss and saving Fran Kubelik, it might be the least C.C. deserves, right? The Reality When you think about it, renting out your home for adulterous husbands to cheat on their wives with their secretaries is a bit of a racket. Fairly unpleasant business actually. Particularly when you consider C.C. gets a girlfriend out of it. What really happens is a lecherous boss takes advantage of his helpless employee, who has no way of resisting his advances. All the while this is helped along by C.C. who is there in the end to pick up the pieces once the girl gets kicked to the curb. Plus he works in marketing. What's to like? Cynical and grubby, he's not quite what he appears to be.
