10 Movie Mentors Who Were Actually Complete Morons

1. Odin €“- Thor

Jesus, Odin€™'s slightly dim. He drops the ball as a mentor so badly at times that you'€™ve got to hope the Odinsleep does more than physically rejuvenate him. I will give him this though:€“ he€™'s certainly got his work cut out. Between fathering a legendarily hot-headed sacked Chippendale look-a-like and adopting the actual god of deception, he'€™d have to eyes in the back of his head to make sure they don€™t do anything stupid, and sure enough, Thor ends up declaring war.

Yet compared to Loki, Thor is a walk in the park. Not only is he the most accomplished liar in the universe €“ something which gives Odin plenty of headaches €“ his past as an adoptee bestows him with a cocktail of childhood trauma potent enough to reduce the Allfather to a quivering wreck and give him the motivation to carry out all sorts of dastardly deeds. He's not just a spanner in the works, he's the biggest spanner in the works you could possibly conceive. Clearly Loki is unmanageable, so it'€™s probably wise to turn most of your attention toward Thor. He€™'s obviously bred to rule, and when he drops the attitude he€™'s actually effective. But more importantly, he€™'s the only thing that stops Loki wrecking up the place when the Allfather goes into a voluntary coma.

But when Thor really screws up, Odin does possibly the stupidest thing possible. He knows forced-coma-time is coming, but he banishes Thor anyway, leaving Asgard in the hands of a clearly mentally unstable bloke who is just coming to terms with his adoption. Exactly when you might need Thor, you send him off to New Mexico to flounce around with Natalie Portman. Don€™t get me wrong: €“I€™'m happy for Thor. But surely, there'€™s a time and a place to teach him a grandiose lesson, and that€™'s not when you€™'re physically frail.
