10 Movie Moments IMPOSSIBLE To Watch Same Way After This
9. Yoda's Puppet Malfunctions During His Death Scene - Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi
Few who've ever seen Return of the Jedi will forget Yoda's (Frank Oz) deeply affecting death scene, where he confirms both that Luke's (Mark Hamill) father is indeed Darth Vader and that there is another Skywalker waiting to be found, before becoming one with the Force.
Throughout the scene, Yoda's eyes drift and wander around, which audiences would surely assume was an intentional effect in order to convey both his extreme age and closeness to death.
However, this was actually a malfunction of the Yoda puppet, as explained by director Richard Marquand himself:
"We had problems with his eyes... Suddenly they would stick on one side or the other. But because Yoda is a very old man and on his death bed, you feel, well, his eyes can go slightly off center."
And Marquand isn't wrong at all. Even so, fans are unlikely to see the scene in quite the same context with this in mind, especially with the film now being available in 4K HDR on Disney+, where every last detail of that damn janky puppet can be scrutinised and picked apart.
