Science fanboys were quick to jump on the "Gravity isn't scientifically sound" bandwagon the moment they realised that director Alfonso Cuaron had set out to make the movie as scientifically accurate as possible. And by "possible," we of course mean: "as scientifically accurate as possible for a Hollywood movie that wants to entertain." The biggest and most controversial moment, though, has irked scientists everywhere: the moment where George Clooney's character is killed. Yes, at the point where Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski find themselves connected via a tether, Kowalski insists that Stone has to let him go so they she can survive: he'll drift off into space to his death, of course. Kowalski unclips his tether and floats away, but many leading scientists (and internet nerds) have insisted that all Stone needed to do to save him was lightly tug the tether towards her. Since the pair had stopped moving, it was a no-brainer.
