10 Movie Moments That Pissed Off Fanboys (That Were Actually Great)
5. Man Of Steel’s Killer Superman
When we think of Superman, whether the chiselled comic book version or Christopher Reeve as the superhero’s most iconic cinematic incarnation, we think of a man with unquestionable ethics – a man of morals focused on justice rather than simply dispatching his villainous foes.
So, when Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel came along and dared to depict Henry Cavill’s Superman killing General Zod – and not for petty reasons either like Zod’s outfit was better, but because the villain has his deathly heat vision trained on an innocent, cowering family and beyond that was pretty hell-bent on destroying all of Metropolis – purist fans complained that this move went against everything the superhero stands for.
But as Snyder points out the old ‘Superman doesn’t kill’ rule might extend to the cinematic superhero, but comic book Superman has actually killed a good few times and moreover, it’s not like Man of Steel’s Superman took the task lightly. Clearly anguished at having to decide between saving innocents and killing one of the last surviving members of the Kryptonian race, Man of Steel heralds a grittier Superman more in line with the times that is sometimes forced into amoral actions in conflict with his belief for the better good.
