10 Movie Moments That Should Make You Look Away (But Totally Gripped You)
9. Stepping On A Nail - A Quiet Place
Many of us have stepped on a piece of LEGO, most of us have stepped on a plug, but none of us have refrained from letting out a guttural death cry (and a fair few swear words) the moment our foot comes into contact with either one of those death traps. So imagine if you had to be silent because your life literally depended on it…but then you step on a SHARP NAIL…well, that’s exactly what happens in ‘A Quiet Place’.
When Emily Blunt’s heavily pregnant Evelyn Abbott accidentally exposes a nail on the stairs to her basement, it’s only a matter of time before the absolutely unbearable (but totally predictable) happens and Evelyn – having gone into labour – rushes down the stairs and steps right onto the exposed nail, practically impaling her barefoot. Naturally, she cries out in pain, drops a framed photo (which smashes on the ground) and alerts the film’s antagonists – blind but murderous creatures with an acute sense of hearing.
From the moment the nail comes on-screen, the audience can see the inevitable coming from a mile away; they are on the edge of their seats, anxiously preparing to inhale sharply, but when it does eventually happen, the sight of Emily Blunt’s barefoot being punctured is both shocking and impossible to look away from.
