The Dark Crystal is one of Jim Henson's brilliant films, in the same vein as Labyrinth - it's trippy, deep and completely terrifying at times. The Skeksis are the villains, some kind of reptilian/bird race that lead lives of complete opulence and enslave these sad little things called Podlings. To both a kid and an adult, the Skeksis seem really brutal. However, as a kid, these monsters not only looked scary, but watching them drain the life out of the adorable Podlings and Gelflings is unimaginably traumatising. To an adult, it's all still serious and dark, but the thing that has changed is that most can see the symbolism and the references in this film that make it so completely genius. The Skeksis basically represent everything that is wrong with society - they live selfishly, materialistically and lavishly. They even constantly fight each other because they can't even see beyond their own self-centred existence to co-exist peacefully. Everyone still hates the Skeksis, but now it's clear to see that they are just pathetic, wealth-obsessed bags of bones. What movie moments scared you as a kid that you've come to laugh at now?
