The idea of a sleepy little town being swallowed up by an impenetrable mist containing creatures straight out of your worst nightmares is a pretty bone-chilling concept. This is exactly what happens in the 2007 film adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist, and, as you see the survivors edging perilously through their hellish hometown, you definitely get the sense that the monsters they run into are only the tip of the iceberg.

Aside from a swarm of cat-sized insects, everything the film throws at Thomas Jane's David Drayton is disguised by a veil of fog, and, in most cases, all you're given to work with is a haunting silhouette of something that's absolutely not of this earth.

The film takes the Lovecraftian approach of letting the unknown drive the sense of fear in the story. Seeing a helpless man being dragged off out of sight by a stray tentacle, how can you not wonder, "what the hell is that thing connected to?"

And the Cthulhu-esque behemoth that dwarfs everything in sight: is that the biggest these mist creatures get, or is there something else out there that dwarfs even that?!
