Many horror movies are founded on the idea of something evil lurking in the shadows. Would Michael Myers have been nearly as terrifying if he'd strolled about the streets in the middle of the day? Jump scares are one thing, but for a horror movie monster to slip our watch for the entire film and yet still leave a feeling of constant dread in the air is really quite an achievement.

Amelia Vanek first becomes aware of the Babadook in a harrowing pop-up storybook owned by her son, Sam. The book portrays it as a tall, thin creature dressed in all-black clothes and possessing a white face with an unnaturally large grinning mouth. Though there are plenty of pictures of the thing, the only proper glimpse of it you ever see is when it drops down from the ceiling at Amelia, showing its real face for an absolute fraction of a second.

That's it, however. Other than that, the Babadook is never actually seen on screen. Even at the end of the film, when Amelia manages to trap it in her basement, the scene unfolds from the Babadook's point of view, so who knows just what state it's in once it has been 'tamed'?
