10 Movie Plot Twists So Subtle You Totally Missed Them
1. Everybody Wears Polyester Because The World Forgot How To Farm - Idiocracy
Here's a film folks don't talk about nearly enough - Mike Judge's terrifically prescient satire Idiocracy. You might recall that once Corporal Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson) wakes up in the deeply stupid future of 2505, every single person he encounters wears only polyester clothing.
There is actually a reason for this, though, albeit one which you probably didn't put together yourself.
It's a significant plot point that America has been turned into a dust bowl due to the nation's citizens forgetting how to farm, and instead attempting to irrigate crops with an energy drink called Brawndo.
As a result, it stands to reason that this society wouldn't be able to grow cotton, which in our own reality is used for around 75% of all clothing.
And so, with polyester being a synthetic fiber derived from petroleum, it wouldn't require a working knowledge of farming to produce - hence why it's all you see anybody wearing in Idiocracy's hilariously bleak vision of the future.
