10 Movie Plot Twists So Subtle You Totally Missed Them
3. Gwen's Peter Turned Himself Into The Lizard - Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Woman aka Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) makes her first appearance by speedily unfurling her backstory, which includes revealing that her version of Peter Parker died during an encounter with the Lizard.
But if you pay close attention to this scene, it actually reveals the truth that's only concretely clarified in the recent sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, that her Peter died after transforming himself into the Lizard.
Yet the key evidence is there in Into the Spider-Verse, too. Peter's corpse has a number of blue scales on it, which while seeming like a mere stylistic quirk to the layperson, is actually an indication that Peter died after turning himself into the Lizard, just as he did in the Spider-Verse comics.
More to the point, the shot directly before this, of Gwen kicking the Lizard in silhouette, shows the Lizard transforming back into human form in mid-air.
At the time many surely assumed they were watching Dr. Curt Conners become human again, but Across the Spider-Verse confirms we were indeed looking at Peter.
Some canny fans pegged this years ago, but for those not au fait with the comics, they surely didn't realise the twist until Across the Spider-Verse said it out loud.
