10 Movie Plot Twists That Punished Loyal Fans

8. Tom Webster Isn't Real (Last Christmas)

From the second its debut trailer came out, fans were predicting - despite the film being an original story - what the twist in festive rom-com Last Christmas would be. Nobody even knew that it definitely would have a twist, but the footage was so clearly pointing towards a certain outcome, that it just seemed like an inevitability.

Well, spoiler alert: it was.

Like a train speeding towards its next pre-assigned destination, the film reveals that Tom Webster (Henry Golding) isn't actually real, and that he can only be seen by miserable thirty-something retail worker Kate (Emilia Clarke).

Movie fans spent months saying that this would be the twist, and lo and behold, we were right. Even then, a lot of folks may have bought tickets with a glimmer of hope that the talented duo of director Paul Feig and writer Emma Thompson could come up with something a bit less predictable, but sadly, they could not.

Watching this movie and expecting something other than the blindingly obvious... and then getting the blindingly obvious. It felt like punishment for buying a ticket.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
