10 Movie Plot Twists That Will TRAUMATIZE You

Late in this tremendous war drama, Simon (Maxim Gaudette) staggers into a hotel room, traumatized. He says to his twin sister, Jeanne (Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin), "One plus one, does it make one?" Jeanne realizes what he means and lets out perhaps the single most horrifying gasp in movie history. That mirrors exactly how Incendies' big twist will make audiences feel. 

The film follows Simon and Jeanne as they fulfil the dying wish of their mother Nawal, which is to deliver her letters to their father and to their brother. They learn that she's from a war-torn Middle Eastern country and that she was in prison for many years. She was raped by one of the guards, and that guard was their father. Nawal also had a son, Nihad (Abdelghafour Elaaziz), years earlier, but she was forced to give him up as he was born out of wedlock. 

It emerges that Nihad became a soldier and then a guard at the same prison where their mother was... he was the man who raped her. He is both the father and the brother of the twins. 

It gets even worse. Nihad emigrated abroad and his mother encountered him at a swimming pool. She recognized her son's tattoo but when she saw the face of her rapist, the shock gave her a fatal stroke. As well as being a genius way to symbolize the destructive effects of war, this is also one of the most harrowing, brutal plot twists ever committed to celluloid.
