The South Korean masterpiece Oldboy is not only one of the all-time great revenge thrillers - it also contains what ranks among the most deranged revenge plots ever committed to film.

At the start, businessman Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is abruptly kidnapped and imprisoned in a cell for 15 years. During this time, Dae-su's wife is murdered, his daughter is adopted abroad and he's now the main suspect in the crime. He doesn't know why, and his release is just as sudden. His mysterious captor gives him five days to work out who he is and why he locked him up.

Dae-su investigates, and along the way he falls in love with a young chef named Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung). He eventually concludes that the captor is Lee Woo-jin (Yoo Ji-tae), a former classmate. Dae-Su saw Woo-jin having sex with his own sister and though he only mentioned it to one friend, the rumours spread and Woo-jin's beloved sister committed suicide.

Woo-jin, a wealthy capitalist, paid some gangsters to lock up Dae-su and he engineered the romance between Dae-su and Mi-do via hypnosis... because Mi-do is actually Dae-su's daughter. All along, Woo-jin's aim was to trick Dae-su into committing incest.

It's so, so messed up, and it's telling that the film's regrettable Hollywood remake couldn't quite commit to the extremity of the original. Indeed, it's a film that will be too much for many viewers, although those who can stomach it are in for one of the greatest movies of the century.
