10 Movie Plots Made Possible By Ridiculous Convenience
4. Love Actually: Airport Security Are Useless
Easily one of the nation's favourite Christmas/love films; Love Actually is cinematic brilliance on so many fronts. The cast is superb, the narrative is engaging on several levels, Joanna Page is pictured in the nude - what more could you possible want?
Well... A bit more realism would've been nice in a few places, actually.
As the film nears its conclusion, Liam Neeson's step son Sam has mastered the drums in a remarkably short time (like that isn't convenient enough) and performs at his school with the object of his affections, Joanna. The performance is a raucous success but Sam discovers the terrible news that Joanna is returning to America that night.
Cue the race to the airport, via a Claudia Schiffer cameo, and Sam goes on a daredevil run through a busy London airport without being stopped once by the haphazard, slapstick security guards. He reaches the gate just as Joanna is about to board, declares his love and all is well - not even any punishment for the child that broke several laws in the process of chasing after a girl.
9/11 had happened two years before the release of this film - TWO YEARS! - airport security were still carrying firearms in 2003!
