8. Argo Wins "Best Picture" At The Oscars
Hardly a revelatory prediction, albeit a bet that's not as safe as we thought it was two or three months ago. Argo was released to overwhelming critical acclaim, and was also a modest box office success, being regarded by many critics as one of the best, if not
the best film of the year. However, like ever year, there are those late-bloomers in awards season that threaten to crash the party, such as Les Miserables, Zero Dark Thirty and Lincoln, which had strong critical acclaim and are almost certain to rack up Best Picture nominations. Still, Argo continues to win many precursor awards - if perhaps not as many as it would have liked - and is regarded as an Academy-friendly mix of taut storytelling and sly humour. As a result, it's the perfect film to win Best Picture, and at the same time cement Ben Affleck as one of the truly great modern filmmakers.
