4. The Godfather (9.2)
Like many others, I've grown up hearing nothing but veneration for the Godfather. It is widely considered the best film of all time and currently sits second on the IMDB Top 250 behind The Shawshank Redemption. With a ridiculously high rating of 9.2, it was very difficult for me to watch this movie with an open mind. The glowing reviews it recieves pretty much everywhere, gives one extremely high expectations that you're about to watch one of the best movies ever made. I think its safe to say, I was expecting perfection. However sadly, after reflection I thought the Godfather to be nothing more than a "good" movie. It was worth watching. I was glad I'd seen it. But the greatest movie ever made? No. not by a long shot. The portrayal of mob life in post-war New York was very well presented by Coppola, and the performance of Marlon Brando as Don Corleone I have to say was nothing short of outstanding. Al Pacino and Robert Duvall were equally impressive in their more supportive roles and provided great backing to Brando. However, for all its positives, I thought the film went on far too long than was necessary and the fact that the pacing was so deliberately protracted, meant that I frequently found myself yawning and glancing at my watch. But as I said, it was not a bad movie, in fact it was enjoyable for the most part. Evidently, Coppola injected a great volume of skill and dedication into its making. And with good results. However in my opinion, a 9.2 rating it is not. I have definitely seen better and as much as people won't want to admit it, I'm sure many can agree with me on that. My Rating: 8.3
