10 Movie References You Didn't Get As A Kid (But Do As An Adult)
3. An Overcompensating Castle - Shrek
As alluded to previously, most kids' films will sneak in a joke or two for the parents watching, but it seems as though the Shrek franchise has gone out of its way to do this as many times as possible, as often as possible.
Suggestive song lyrics, substances being found on Puss in Boots' person, and the punderful name that is Lord Farquaad have all been worth a chuckle from the more mature members of the audience, but the best is arguably another that revolves the villain who might as well have been called Lord F*ckwad.
When Shrek (Mike Myers) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) make it to the villain's castle, they discover just how big it is. As the image cranes up and up to the very top, Shrek asks his companion whether he thinks Farquaad (John Lithgow) is compensating for something.
As Shrek laughs at the insinuation of the castle being so big to make up for certain other shortcomings, there's not much response at all from Donkey, likely mirroring the reaction of just about every onlooking parent and child, respectfully. This is exactly the kind of moment "I'll tell you when you're older" was made for.
