The role of Captain Von Trapp in the iconic musical movie The Sound of Music really put Christopher Plummer into the spotlight and helped to establish his career. Most actors would be thankful for a job like that, and Plummer has at least called the movie well-made, but has also repeatedly stated that he didn't enjoy working on it at all.

The veteran Canadian actor called his role "awful" and "gooey", even going so far as to nickname the film "The Sound of Mucus", and was frustrated to constantly be associated with it despite the fact that he appeared in so many other pictures and theatre roles.

Plummer tried to distance himself from the film in the years that followed and was often quite harsh about it in interviews, even refusing to appear at the 40th Anniversary cast reunion, but did eventually soften his stance. He said that the film wasn't bad for what it was and that he was happy to be associated with such a successful picture, but maintained that the role wasn't much fun to play and he vastly preferred acting in Shakespearean parts like Hamlet and King Lear.
