10 Movie Roles That Traumatised Actors

5. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant)

It's no secret that Leonardo DiCaprio went through some sh*t whilst filming for the survival drama The Revenant, and was aptly rewarded with his very first Oscar in light of the traumas he put himself through. Chewing through raw bison liver (a particular feat for breaking the vegetarian diet he's followed since 1992), working in -30C degrees, and clambering in and out of a dead horse are just some of the gruelling tasks set for the actor throughout filming.

He repeatedly suffered from viral infections also, contracting the flu numerous times throughout the schedule, with it being a true battle to not regularly get hypothermia. Dunking himself in rivers repeatedly, the giant bearskin DiCaprio had to wear was often soaked entirely through and then frozen in place by the ridiculous temperatures, making movement even harder than it was already for the long-suffering star.

DiCaprio cited the experience as containing 30 or 40 sequences that were the most difficult things he's ever had to do, which is clearly more than enough to earn some serious recognition from the Academy. Whilst DiCaprio has made a full recovery from his time on The Revenant, the horrible filming conditions and grisly experiences will stay with him for a long time yet. At least it was all worth it.
