10 Movie Scenes Everyone Skips

6. The Answering Machine Message - Swingers

Similarly cringeworthy but infinitely more painful is the iconically embarrassing answering machine message scene from Doug Liman's hit comedy Swingers.

The scene in question sees recently-single protagonist Mike (Jon Favreau) attempting to leave an answering machine message for a woman he met at a club earlier in the night.

An anxious Mike rambles while leaving his first message, causing the end of his phone number to get cut off, and as he calls back to correct the mistake, his neurosis gets the better of him, causing him to screw it up again.

An increasingly nervous Mike continues to leave more messages until the woman finally answers her phone and demands he never call her again.

The scene drags on for three excruciating minutes, and while the situation is completely relatable to anyone who's ever over-thought anything in their life - that is, all of us - it's also completely maddening to watch this man torpedo his own romantic prospect.

It's brilliantly written and acted for what it's supposed to be, but also perhaps a bit too real to endure on subsequent viewings.
